Popplewell Trophy

Ian GrahamThe recipient of the Popplewell Trophy for the season 2021-22 is Ian Graham. After a year of non-activity we are pleased to be able to award this trophy again. The words of his nomination from Bournemouth AC say it all:

"Ian Graham has been a staunch supporter of the Hampshire Cross Country League for many years as competitor, team manager, official and match organiser.

"About nine years ago, Ian proposed to the Bournemouth AC committee that the club should host one of the League Fixtures after an absence of many years. He felt it was important that BAC, as one of the larger and older clubs in the League, should play its part and was prepared to organise the event with the support of the rest of the club. The committee was happy to approve this request. Ian set about this task with his usual dedication.

"Since then, Ian has almost single-handedly organised the fixture at Kings Park, Bournemouth with great efficiency. This includes, amongst other things, revamping the courses to be used for the various age groups, setting up a new start and finish area, liaising with the local authority to ensure the course is marked correctly, arranging for the provision of mobile toilet facilities, drawing up a rota of marshals, timekeepers and other officials, providing maps on directions to the stadium and the various courses. He has also insisted that races are included for Under 11s to encourage the younger athletes to be able to participate.

"As a result of all this careful planning, the fixture at Kings Park has now become a much loved and permanent addition to the League fixture list."

The HCCL committee is pleased to award the Popplewell Trophy to Ian in acknowledgement of his work and dedication to the League.

Athlete lists

May I please remind Team Managers that lists of athletes for the Cross Country season 2021-22 should be being compiled and sent to Pam Bungay and Pam Rogers soon for checking and adding to our databases.

As in the past, we are happy to receive lists with additions sent as the season progresses. Some of you may not appreciate the amount of work that goes into the preparation of the results databases, so we would appreciate the lists sooner rather than later and especially not the night before the first fixture, or early on the morning of the first fixture. If you could aim for the end of October we would appreciate it.

I have prepared a new format which you can download below. I would appreciate it if age categories could be made clear using the criteria, V40, V50, V60, V70 etc.

Thanks.
